Re:Questions - 2006/11/27 21:13
Hey, i just found out something. The previous PM system was installed exactly one year ago! How weird is that?
You are right, sometimes things do happen without someone's knowledge. Especially at a site as large and feature-rich as this one. And if it happens in a component or feature that i'm not using on a daily basis, it's very easy to miss if something does go wrong. So again, thanks for reporting the problem! (i can't say this enough )
About the verse of the day thingy, you may be able to find one for different translations as well. The one that i'm using is limited to NIV and KJV only, but i know that i've ran across a few others (which, by the way, wouldn't have worked with the system BMGIP is running on) that support different translations and languages. So when you build your website, make sure that you take a good look around and see what kinds of translations there are. Maybe your (next) favorite translation will be there too

Well, thanks for the reply. And, I'll definitely keep that in mind. Anyway, for some strange reason, now, there seems to be a couple other problems. Well, at least one problem--another broken link, I think. You might want to check out the Rivet Bat Media link--the links that are supposed to be under there do not show, unless I'm not aware of something. And there's one more thing about the private messaging thing again. You could possibly be revamping it, but there is no private message link. Not sure if that's the way things are supposed to be, but I think it used to not be that way. But, in my absence, you rearranged the site, so I have no clue how things are supposed to be anymore, probably. Andyway, that's the deal with that. Thanks for everything--I would have gone absolutely nuts if I hadn't said anything. Mark

Don't go nuts, i'll do that for the both of us
Ermm, let me think about this one for a minute...
I think that the problem may be caused by your screenreader not reporting nested levels in DHTML menus when they fold out automatically, because the menu is one things that has been changed over the last few months. Previously, the menu was text-only, but because the number of nested menus grew so large, and because every time you wanted to reach one of those nested menus the entire page had to be refreshed, the decision was made to switch to a DHTML menu instead. Besides, the whole site was getting too cluttered with text, tidbits and doodads.
As i said, the menu has some nested levels. These levels automatically fold out to the right as sub menus when you hover your mouse over one of the root items. If there is more than one item in the nested level, then the top item is to the immediate right of the root item. The items with nested levels are: Profile. Nested items: "Private Messages" and "Member List". Links. Nested item: "Submit Link". GigCalendar. Nested items: "View All Bands", "View all Venues" and "View / Edit your Gigs". Rivet Bat Media. Nested items: "Rivet Bat Radio", "Rivet Bat Radio player" and "Rivet Bat Video". Articles. Nested items: "The News", "The FAQ" and "All Articles".
The root items are still clickable, but not all of them link to a page where you can do something. Rivet Bat Media is one of those.
I hope this helps a bit, i know this is kind of like moving around the furniture for you. When i installed the DHTML menu, i was hoping that it wouldn't cause you too much trouble. I'm sorry that it has.
If you can somehow disable either DHTML support or Javascript in your browser, then the classic menu will be shown instead of the new one, albeit a lot lower down the page than usual. Then again, maybe that's not nescessary, now that you know where everything went.
Still, if you keep running into trouble, let me know and i'll see what i can do. After all, i want everyone to be able to enjoy BMGIP. And i still mean everyone!
EDIT: Forgot to mention that in the new PM system, there are 3 tabs. "Inbox", "New Message" and "Outbox". If you send a new message, there will be 3 text boxes below eachother, marked "To", "Subject" and "Message". If you start typing a name in the "To" box, then there will be an autocomplete feature that will try and find the name whilst you are typing. The list of possible names will be shown ten at a time, immediately below the "To" textbox, so if you let your mouse rest between "To" and "Subject", maybe those names will be read to you whilst you are typing.

Thanks. I'll see about figuring it out. And, it seems like you're a lot quicker when replying these days than you used to be--which, BTW, I appreciate. Thanks. Mark

Re:Questions - 2006/12/15 11:41
Hey, I tried everything I possibly can to figure it out, but I still can't. I've since inlisted the assistance of the technical support team of the company that makes my screen reader. Freedom Scientific--maker of JAWS For Windows--has never let me down when I've had a question regarding the use of JAWS and as such, they'll not let me down now, hopefully. Reason I bring it up is that they're going to need to log in to the site to better assess the situation. I told them I'd get back to them ASAP. I was just wanting to let you know of that, and I also wanted to ask you if you had implemented some sort of varification into the sign-up. If so, you may need to temporarily disable it. I know when I signed up, there was no varification, but it may have been yet another thing changed in my unplanned absence! I think that there is a way to resolve this accessibility issue without putting a clamp on your creativity, so if you could get back to me on the varification, etc, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, the good people over at FS are free to create an account on BMGIP, if that's what you mean. The only kind of verification needed is that they sign up with a working email address, an activation email will be sent to that account with a link for them to click on, after which they will have access to everything that you have access to on BMGIP.
Personally, i think that there is a chance that JAWS trips over the DHML that's used. On the other hand, JAWS has been around for such a long time that the chance of me being right is very slim.
To the FS person (once he/she is here): if you are reading this, i'm curious about what causes the problem too!
P.S. One more thing has changed in the Rivet Bat Media menu, and that's the disapperance of the Rivet Bat Radio link, which would open the request page of RBR. It will be back when the request system is working again. The players do work though.
