When i was a little boy of about 7 years old, i fell madly in love with Snowwhite. the Disney version of her that is. I simply adored her, she was so beautiful! And the story, i could relate to that for so many reasons. In this page, i will explain why i think Snowwhite is Goth. Appearance: As the story goes, Snowwhite looked as follows:
Sounds pretty Goth looking to me.
Background: Snowwhite was a girl from royal descent and as a royal, she would have been required to develop the creative skills that were commonplace amongst the women of nobility of that time. Some of the common art forms to exercise were:
and besides those, there were obviously more, but i'm too lazy to think of them now. Goths too are very creative and always looking for an outlet for their creativity though many different art forms, not rarely combining two or more art forms. Her mother died shortly after giving birth to Snowwhite, most likely giving her a feeling of having been abandoned, especially after her father married a woman who hated Snowwhite and (as we all know) was secretly a witch. This is a perfect breeding ground for angst. Although i see no indication that SW indeed was an angsty girl, i still can not rule out that possibility. Her stepmother hated SW, that is an established fact. She hated SW so much even that she wanted her dead, so she poisoned SW's comb. The fact that she chose the comb as an instrument to kill SW with, is a strong indication that SW spend a lot of time on her appearance. Not that that's exclusive to Goths though but Goths do put a lot of value on looking the way they feel looks good. When SW discovered that her stepmom tried to kill her, she fled the castle. Which shows her non-violent side. I have no doubt that she would have fought if she had to, but rather than to fight and cause harm, she chose not to fight but take flight. (from my own experience, that took a lot more guts than fighting ever would!) Once out of the castle, she wandered through the forest for hours. The solitude whilst being in a peaceful environment like the forest should have been a relief for her, even though there was no way for her to go home anymore. After a few hours, the forest got thinker and darker and it was getting late too. It wouldn't be long before the darkness set in so SW started to look for a shelter. She stumbled across this little house that, as she later found out, was inhabited by dwarves. When she found out about the dwarves (after they found out about her, because she ate their food and had fallen asleep in their bed(s)), she didn't think they were horrible or scary. Instead, she chose to stick around and live with them. In other words, she chose to hang with those that were cast out by society. Then stepmommy dearest found out where SW was and sent a huntsman out to kill her. When he found her, he was so struck by her beauty, that he he could not bring himself to kill SW and instead decided to kill a wild bore and bring the heart of the animal to the stepmom as proof that he had successfully killed SW. After a little while, the queen found out that SW wasn't dead after all, so she tried to finish her off herself. She dressed up as an old lady selling apples from door to door (well, you know the story, but i wanted to mention it, just to be thorough). She had poisoned one apple and offered it to SW as a sample of the merchandise. SW being the nice girl she was, indulged the lovely old lady and died instantly. The dwarves laid her to rest in a glass coffin, they thought it would be appropriate because that way, everybody could see her beauty. Then one day, a prince wandered by and saw how beautiful SW was and even though she was dead, he wanted to kiss her. ...He kissed her... ...Then she woke up... It turned out that the bit of aple she bit off, got lodged in her throat so that the poison that it was soaked in wasn't taken up in her body all at once, in a dose that was just enough to instead cause SW to get into deep sleep. The kiss caused the bit of apple to get dislodged, getting SW to wake up, realize what hapened and spew out the bit of apple. Now the queen, vain as she was, stood in front of her mirror again, asking for the milliont-and-tenth time who was the faires of 'em all. When the mirror replied again that SW was the fairest, she threw a fit, burst a bloodvessel in her brain and she died. The news about the queen's death soon reached the little house of the dwarves, so SW knew it would be safe to return to the castle together with her new boyfriend, the prince.
Lessons learned:
Lessons learned from SW about Goths:
Goths aren't obsessed with death, other people are and project that onto the Goths because they don't want to face their own obsessions. I think i have proven, beyont any doubt, that Snowwhite is as Goth as they get and that there isn't a classic story that is as Gothic as the story about Snowwhite...
To everyone that think that they should take this all too seriously: LIGHTEN UP! It's just a bunch of ramblings of a madman, playing on the stereotypes that persist around Goths. But if you do recognize yourself in all this, more power to you. Discuss this article on the forums. (0 posts) Trackback(0)
