For this article, i am going to assume that you, the reader, are not a Christian, but that you were curious about how we as Christians could call ourselves Goth. I may also explain some things in too great a detail because i think that some people (both Christians as well as non-Christians) could do with some more information that they usually get. Well, here goes, i've never written something like this before so please bear with me: simply put, we are Goths who chose to be Christians. One could argue that to claim Gothdom, one must establish what that exactly is, but i think that there are more than enough websites around that explain this. Two good sites (among many) are: A Study of Gothic Subculture and Goth with a Sledgehammer. In case you have been in the scene for a short while (less than 2 years) or think that Cradle of Filth, Marlyn Manson or Within Temptation is a good example of what a Goth band is, then the aforementioned websites are recommended reading. As all Goths, we too have a strong sense of spirituality, alongside the trades that define us as Goths. This spirituality can be expressed in different ways and the way we chose is Christianity. Like many non-Christians, the first thing you think of when hearing the word Christian is a Catholic church, but there really are many blends of Christianity, there's Catholisism, Eatern Orthodoxy, Evangelicals, Pentecostals, Baptists, too much to mention and there are some major differences between each of them. But we have one thing in common and that's that we all believe that God exists and that Jesus Christ is his son. We also believe that Jesus has died to allow God to forgive us our sins, as long as we ask God to forgive them. Of course, sinning wilfully and then expecting forgiveness would be stupid and irrational, it doesn't work that way. God knows exactly what's going on in our hearts and minds and a request for forgiveness will fall on deaf ears if we are not truly sorry about those sins. We view the world as a dark place where a lot a bad happens, bad stuff that we acknowledge, but we will not take part in them. We do not encourage the use of alcohol but we don't frown upon it, as long it is being used in moderation. The use of drugs like weed however is frowned upon, not only can it in some cases lead to the use of more addictive substances and can it stifle creative expressions, but it often drives a wedge between the user and God. Vegetarianism and veganism does occur but not all Christian Goths are vegetarians. This is perfectly acceptable, as long as noone is trying to push the non-vegs into changing their diets. We think that sex is intended for two people to enjoy within the sanctity and sanctuary of marriage. Should you wonder how we would know if two partners are sexually compatible as far as likes and dislikes go, then the answer is simple: we don't. But, if you are married and intend to stay together for the rest of your earthly life, then you will find ways to grow more toward eachother in that respect. This is true sexually, but also emotionally. And now a touchy subject: homosexuality. Many christians that find themselves attracted to members of their own sex choose to remain celibate for the rest of their lives. Some believe that homosexuality can be cured, others believe that one can learn to live with it. Whichever view eventually proves to be correct, gays, lesbians and bisexuals are being accepted in the Christian Goth scene, it's the sexual act itself that we view as sinful, but not the person itself. Lastly, we feel that it's not desirable to force our views upon others, much less as we like other's views to be forced upon us. However, should you be curious about what we believe, then we are more than willing to explain. I think that's about all that i could tell. Oh, i'm sure that i could touch many more subjects, like what music do we listen to or how do we dance, what are our favorite writers and what do we eat. But should you have any further questions, then feel free to email us (see the "contact us" link in the menu) and ask away. If it turns out that i have missed a subject, then i will add it.
